Common Manual Therapy Techniques

  1. Joint Mobilization-
This technique involves the therapist applying graded movements to a joint to improve its range of motion and reduce pain. It is commonly used for conditions like shoulder, back, ankle, and knee joint pain or stiffness.

  2. Soft Tissue Mobilization-
This includes methods like massage and stretching to improve muscle function and reduce tension. Techniques such as myofascial release and trigger point therapy are used to target specific areas of muscle tightness and pain.

  3. Muscle Energy Techniques- (MET)
In MET, the patient actively contracts muscles against a counterforce applied by the therapist. This technique helps in restoring joint function and reducing pain.

  4. High-Velocity Low-Amplitude (HVLA) Thrust
This technique involves a quick, controlled movement to mobilize a joint and reduce pain. It is often used in chiropractic care and can be beneficial for improving joint mobility.

  5. Strain-Counterstrain-
A gentle technique where the therapist identifies tender points and positions the body to relieve tenderness, holding the position for about 90 seconds. It is used for musculoskeletal pain and chronic pain conditions.
